CONSEC 2008
"Security for the Nation"

Lord James Bethell (one of the Association of Security Consultant's (ASC) Patrons) was the Keynote Speaker at the Association's successful annual international conference, CONSEC, which was held on 06 November 2008 at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon, one of the most prestigious aviation museums in the world.

"Security for the Nation" was the theme, and the most effective way forward is in shared experiences and knowledge. CONSEC's eminent speakers assembled by the ASC provided a wealth of expertise and experience gained in their diverse fields.

The Chair for the day, Peter Clarke (former Assistant Commissioner Specialist Operations for the Metropolitan Police), kept the distinguished speakers in order and made the day run extremely smoothly with his exceptional wit and humour, and gave invaluable input with his vast knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.

As Keynote Speaker, Lord Bethell gave an interesting outline of politics and security. Other speakers included Detective Chief Inspector Mick Neville, who shared his candid and sometimes controversial views on how to realise the massive investment in CCTV. Chris Tomlinson (Arup Security Consulting) provided Arup's views on design guidance and building resilience against terrorist attack. Other renowned speakers included Dr. John Ross Wyatt (Chairman, Technical Director and Principal Lecturer of SDS Group Ltd.), who gave an interesting and comprehensive presentation on explosive effects ? mitigation. John Ellis (Strategy Consultant, Symantec) provided some particularly thought provoking details on information security threats of the future. Chief Superintendent Kevin Hurley shared experiences on the lessons of Iraq and policing a fractured society.

Sponsors showcased their products and individual security innovations at an exclusive exhibition as part of the event. Major sponsor was Lenel and other sponsors included JVC Professional Europe, Salto Systems, MAXxess Systems, SMT, Nedap, TDSi, Complus Teltronic and Kaba Ltd. The ASC had their own stand as well.

Roy Sutherland, the newly appointed Chairman of the Association of Security Consultants, commented that he was pleased to see so many members of the Association and other delegates at the conference. Each year increasing numbers of delegates are attending this popular event, with this year's forum attracting over 170 bookings. More attendees are staying until the closure of the conference the ASC believe it's because of the calibre of speakers and what they have to offer, and not because of the tea and delicious scones, jam and cream that are provided at the end of the day.

The ASC is looking forward to CONSEC next year which will be held on 05 November 2009, again at the RAF Museum at Hendon.
